6 January, 2021
The ACCC has released its final report for the northern Australia Insurance Inquiry. The report and media release are now available on at www.accc.gov.au/insurance.
The Australian Government requested the inquiry, commencing in 2017, to help address concerns about the affordability and availability of home, contents and strata insurance in northern Australia.
The final report brings together the findings and recommendations made throughout the inquiry. The report itself is a very detailed document, but a summary and list of recommendations at the beginning of the report.
A total of 38 wide-ranging recommendations for reform to help address the problems identified, across six categories:
- Making it easier to search for, and compare, insurance products
- Choosing the right amount of cover
- Dealing with conflicts of interest
- Addressing immediate affordability concerns
- Improving consumers’ rights
- Reducing risk and building better
Many of these recommendations could also benefit consumers and insurance markets nationally, if more broadly applied. These recommendations are now with governments and industry to consider.
